Young people looking for something different, fun and exciting to do will find that special activity on Piedmont Technical College’s Greenwood campus this summer.

 

ADVENTURES IN FLIGHT SUMMER PROGRAM

Interested in the exciting world of aviation? This program will be fun as well as educational as participants explore the principals of flight through the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Each participant will build a remote controlled aircraft of his/her very own, learn to safely fly the aircraft, and discuss the legal and ethical aspects of the commercial and private use of UAVs.

APP ATTACK! SUMMER PROGRAM

Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app and game development tool, students explore the world of web-based apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, students will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer.  No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Automotive CampAUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY SUMMER PROGRAM

In this youth program, participants will learn about tools in the Automotive Technology center, visit local dealerships, tour BMW in Spartanburg and visit NASCAR history. This week-long program is open to students who have an interest in learning about careers in the automotive field. This program requires a letter of recommendation from the student’s guidance counselor.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE YOUTH PROGRAM

The goal of this program is to provide participants with a desire to become a law enforcement officer with a glimpse of the role, responsibility, duties and other prerequisites to becoming a law enforcement professional. Through hands-on activities and simulation equipment, participants will learn the skills necessary to become a law enforcement professional. Activities will include self-defense tactics, physical agility training, first aid techniques, team building exercises, tours of various criminal justice agencies, use of a firearms training simulator, use of a driving training simulator and investigate at a mock crime scene.

Digitech CampDIGITECH SUMMER PROGRAM

If you love computers and photography, then this is the program for you!  This one week program will engage participants in a real-works, hands-on applications in photography, animation, computer hardware and internet security. Participants will take a field trip to a fun and exciting location so they can capture photographs using the technology learned at the camp. Lunch and snacks provided.

DISCOVERING NATURE THROUGH AGRICULTURE SUMMER PROGRAM

Do you like the great outdoors? Participants will have a unique, hands-on experience in this summer program. Explore agriculture, the environment and natural science while utilizing the fields, pastures, and the great outdoors as the classroom. In this program, participants will also learn about plant breeding, fruit and vegetables, and other fun and educational environmental forms of horticulture. This program requires a letter of recommendation from the student’s guidance counselor.

DISCOVERING THE WORLD OF MECHATRONICS AND ROBOTICS SUMMER PROGRAM

This exciting program is for those who enjoy learning by doing and are inquisitive about how things work. Students will use their STEM skills as they learn about factory automation via programming robots, constructing and testing Pneumatic and Hydraulic circuits and programming PLCs.

EXPLORING THE POWER OF ELECTRONICS SUMMER PROGRAM

Participants will explore the world of electronics in a fun and interactive format. Participants will be introduced to basic electronic circuits. They will have hands-on experience in using breadboards to prototype circuits, basic soldering skills, basic soldering iron maintenance and safety. No previous electronic experience is required.

FROM PRINCE TO KING SUMMER CAMP

Older boys will explore the wonderful world of imagination, watch movies about the prince and princess, hear stories and craft prince accessories and armor.  These “little princes” will learn charm, confidence, chivalry, proper manners, self-esteem, social interaction with others, dining etiquette and how to dress with style. The week will end with a formal party along with his coronation.

GIRLS ACHIEVING IN TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING (G.A.T.E.) SUMMER PROGRAM

This summer program is dedicated to introducing young women to explore the world of engineering technology.  Participants will gain knowledge through hands-on activities related to robotics and automation while interacting with engineers from local businesses. A field trip will give future engineers an amazing lesson, on a grand scale, through behind-the-scenes view of the creative and mechanical side of engineering from the project manager of the FURY project at Carowinds. This program requires a letter of recommendation from the student’s guidance counselor.

Junior Dessert CampJUNIOR DESSERT DESIGNER SUMMER PROGRAM

Participants will learn how easy and rewarding it is to decorate beautiful cupcakes and cookies that will delight your family and friends. Our hands-on classes teach decorating techniques used by professionals that you see on television. Learn their secrets and the tricks of the trade. Decorating kits included.

Junior Survival CampJUNIOR SURVIVAL SUMMER PROGRAM

This camp is great for those who enjoy the outdoors, weekend camping trips or hiking trails! Campers will learn basic first aid, CPR and survival skills to keep them safe. They will also learn the importance of fire, water, shelter, food, signaling and compass reading. Campers will even learn what to do when they encounter a wild animal. Each camper will take home his/her own first-aid kit.

LEGO GAMES SUMMER PROGRAM

Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and video games! Students will create their own LEGO universe, characters and adventures in an interactive 2D video game. Everyone is welcome in this one of a kind class. At the end of the program, every student will have a finished LEGO video game that can be shared with friends and family through a password protected Black Rocket website. Games only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee.

MAKE YOUR FIRST 3D VIDEO GAME SUMMER PROGRAM

Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! By popular demand, we redesigned our 3D game design class from beginning to end. This new class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay and storytelling. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in teams for most of the program.

MINECRAFT DESIGNERS SUMMER PROGRAM

If you love the game Minecraft, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games, this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, create skins for characters and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. A parent’s email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in teams for most of the program.

MINECRAFT MODDERS SUMMER PROGRAM

Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mod! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. ROBOTIC ENGINEERING 101 SUMMER PROGRAM

Calling all future robotic inventors!  Do you have a mechanical mind and like to build things? This summer program will be fun as well as educational as participants will learn engineering basics with an emphasis on explorations and trial and error field testing.  Also, learn problem-solving techniques, communication skills and working as a team. Each participant will build his/her own robot and bring it to life!

Science CampSCIENCE TECHNOLOGY YOUTH PROGRAM

Participants will experience science in practice through an introduction to geocaching, a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. This activity will be utilized to teach vector direction, to learn safety in the geocache settings, and to explore the natural environment. In the laboratory, the same vector analysis techniques will be used in an application of simple mechanics: construction of small scale roller coasters. This program requires a letter of recommendation from the student’s guidance counselor.

THE ART OF POTTERY SUMMER PROGRAM

Participants will expand their imaginations, while accomplishing lasting feats of clay. Students will learn to work independently and collaboratively in a small class setting as they learn to form their clay on the pottery wheel, then glaze and fire for the final masterpiece.

VIDEO GAME ANIMATION SUMMER PROGRAM

Take your game design to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in future games. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation or sketching. Student-created animations will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in teams for most of the program.
