LERN Workshops

The Learning Resources Network (LERN) is a leading organization in online learning. LERN provides practical how-to information about teaching online, developing online courses, and strategic planning of online programs. All Piedmont Tech faculty are welcome to participate in LERN programs.

To participate in LERN's online courses:

  1. Read course materials (about 20 pages per day).
  2. Listen to a 10-15 minute lecture and slideshow for each of the 5 days -- anytime day or night.
  3. Visit a class discussion forum or chat room to ask questions and post comments, returning regularly to see what others are saying. The instructor will be visit the forum 4-6 times a day to write comments and answer the questions.
  4. Discuss course topics with your colleagues. A second forum allows you and your fellow participants to post written comments and chat about any topic. This is a good networking opportunity.
  5. Upon completion, print your course certificate and provide a copy to the IDEA Center staff.
  6. Complete a course evaluation which will be provided by the IDEA Center staff.
       

Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATS) Training

CATS are quick, simple, ungraded, usually anonymous tools that help gather feedback from students on their learning. The CATS Training Team is comprised of Piedmont Tech faculty members who have become well-versed in this area. They lead two sessions to help you get started using CATS in your own classroom.

  • Session I: Introduction to Classroom Assessment Techniques
    Includes defining and selecting classroom assessment techniques, planning your first CATs, and the feedback loop.
     
  • Session II: CATS Reports and the Teaching Goals Inventory
    Participants will complete their own TGI in this session.
     
  • Session III: CATS Clusters
    This session will include how to use CAT clusters with your TGI results, a sharing session on clusters and TGIs, Blooms Taxonomy and CATS.
