Psi Beta Sponsors Campus-wide Mock Baby Shower Print E-mail

babyshower1009The Piedmont Technical College chapter of Psi Beta National Honor Society recently sponsored a campus-wide mock baby shower to support the CrossRoads Pregnancy Center.

“Each year the club looks for a service project. Several of them did an internship or are currently working as interns with CrossRoads,” said Beverly Burton, department head for Public Service. “The baby shower idea was a way to involve the entire campus.”

The CrossRoads Pregnancy Center was established to help women and men dealing with unplanned pregnancies. The organization provides prenatal and parenting classes, pregnancy testing, peer counseling and referrals. Clients who attend classes earn “Mommy Bucks” which allow them to purchase items from a Hope Closet.

Participants were asked to bring an item for the Hope Closet or donate $2 at the door. Students planned the activities and games, decorated the Student Center and provided refreshments.

“We have events like this held at churches and ladies organizations, but this is the first time we’ve worked with a school,” said Casey McClinton, director of CrossRoads. “Events like these not only help us maintain items for the clients, they allow us to create awareness of the services we provide.”

“I think it’s wonderful to see the Psi Beta students excited about this event,” said Quenithia White, a human services student from Cross Hill who is currently working as an intern at CrossRoads. “It has been a great experience working there and it has made me decide I want to work in this field, helping girls who are dealing with a crisis pregnancy.”
