Truck Driver Training

More than 80 percent of communities in South Carolina depend exclusively on trucks to transport goods. Piedmont Technical College is one of 13 technical colleges that provide Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A training to prepare individuals for careers in the robust truck-driving industry.

Program Information

Offered in Greenwood County, the curriculum offers the hands-on training and in-depth classroom instruction necessary to understand and master the daily requirements of a career in professional truck driving.

The program has been developed in collaboration with some of the major logistics agencies in the region, so you can be sure that you’ll be qualified to enter the workforce with the skills that employers need.

Course Details

  • 7 hours of orientation
  • 50 hours of classroom training
  • 50 hours of field/yard training
  • 32 hours of observation training
  • 16 hours behind-the-wheel training (to include 3 hours night driving)
  • 14 hours of testing and other required activity

Course Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a valid SC Driver's License
  • Obtain a current Official 10-year motor vehicle driving record from the state Department of Motor Vehicles, or DMV (approx. cost $6)
  • Submit and pass the SC Department of Transportation physical exam (approx. cost $109)
  • Obtain a CDL permit from the DMV (approx. cost $21)
  • Complete Work Keys with Bronze level or higher OR provide proof of postsecondary education
  • Complete student application
  • Pay TDT course tuition and fees before starting the program (student cost is $4,295)
  • Attend class

Commercial truck driving plays a critical and expanding role in the growth of South Carolina's economy.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, professional truck drivers can earn up to $61,260 a year in South Carolina.

Graduates of the Professional Truck Driver Training Program will be prepared to work within the state's bustling transportation, distribution and logistics industry cluster.
