Wages/Salary: $200.00 one time stipend upon completion of the week long training and job shadowing.

Requirements:

A South Carolina resident or enrolled in a SC school, college or university • 18 years old on or before June 1, 2024 - no exceptions • Sincere interest in one of the participating health professions • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher • Currently enrolled in or accepted to an accredited college or university for the fall of 2024 with an interest in pursuing a career in a designated Academy career path • Completed graduation/GED requirements prior to June 1, 2024 (Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or Physician Assistant tracks) • Dental track requirement (college students only): Graduated from high school by December 2023 and earned a minimum of 12 hours of academic credit from an accredited college or university • Follow-up: Academy Fellows are required to sign a release document that will allow their progress to be tracked through the respective educational programs with quarterly contact with the student and/or academic program advisor.

Summer Careers Academy Fellows will be participating in activities on an academic medical center campus. Because activities may take place in a hospital/patient setting, MUSC requires that students selected for the program provide proof of immunization for Varicella (Chicken Pox), Rubeola (Red Measles), Rubella (German Measles), and Mumps. Additionally, students accepted as SCA Fellows are required to submit a tuberculosis (TB) test from within 3 months from the start date of the SCA (between March 5, 2024 – May 22, 2024). Students will be notified how to submit this information after being accepted to the Summer Careers Academy. The form confirming immunizations and TB test results and signed by a physician or student health official is due to MUSC Human Resources by May 22, 2024.

Job Description:

2024 Summer Health Careers Academy Internship is a partnership provided by Upstate SC AHEC and the Medical University of South Carolina (M.U.S.C.) to provide: Hands-on skills workshops • Networking with faculty and staff from the health professions programs • Professional skill building • Opportunity to research Public Health topics for group discussions

Program Focuses on the following healthcare tracks:

Dental Medicine • Medicine • Nursing • Occupational Therapy (OT) • Physical Therapy (PT) Deadline to apply: March 20, 2023 • Physician Assistant

Students will learn more about: • Health professions • Admissions requirements for graduate health professions programs • Financial assistance resources • Academic success skills • Professional techniques • Educational & professional opportunities

Hotel lodging and food are provided for the on-campus portion of the Summer Academy. Students will be transported from the hotel to M.U.S.C.  on the days of June 5th through June 7th.  

Students are responsible for travel to and from Charleston.

 

Schedule:
40-hour, week long training / job shadow program the week of June 3rd through June 7th, 2024
June 3rd and June 4th are mandatory virtual training sessions
June 5th through June 7th are In-person programming on the M.U.S.C. campus in Charleston, SC.
