Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration Rule (21 CFR 121) is the newest part of Food Safety Modernization Act. The rule requires businesses that hold, pack, process or manufacture food to develop, implement and maintain a risk – based Food Defense Plan. Starting point of a Food Defense Plan is vulnerability assessment to identify significant vulnerabilities. Significant vulnerabilities become actionable process steps for which the business must identify mitigation strategies along with management components. All these activities must be conducted by Food Defense Qualified Individual / Individuals.
In order to become Qualified Individual, a person must complete training according to standardized curriculum recognized by FDA or qualify through job experience. Intentional Adulteration Vulnerability Assessment Course by FSPCA is one way to become qualified individual and is recognized by FDA.
