Requirements:

Requires a Bachelor's degree in leisure services, parks, recreation management, or related field supplemented by nine to twelve months of responsible experience in recreation programming; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must obtain certification as deemed appropriate by the City. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver?s license. Must be physically able to operate a variety of maintenance tools and equipment. Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Position involves walking, reaching, bending, crouching, reclining, stooping, and balancing and is excess of sedentary work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to one
hundred pounds.

Job Description:

Under general supervision, performs administrative work in assisting in the planning and directing of the City?s recreation activities. Work involves organizing sports and athletic programs,coordinating public relations activities, planning special events, preparing various reports and documents, and ensuring community needs are met with respect to recreation and parks activities. Reports to the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists with planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating of recreation programs to ensure compliance with all City policy and procedures and effective and efficient operations of the programs including organizing leagues, coordinating programs and advertising, making schedules for fields and volunteers, organizing try-outs, organizing banquets, maintaining and purchasing all equipment, registering all applicants, obtaining sponsors, scheduling umpires and referees, preparing tournament brackets and boards, handling athletic protests, and officiating
activities. Supervises some department personnel and part-time staff to include instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; acting on employee problems; allocating personnel; and recommending disciplinary actions. Assists with the Department?s special programs and events, which involves planning, coordinating, setting up, and staffing as well as coordinating with other agencies.Coordinates public relations activities to include writing newspaper articles and notices, writing radio announcements, speaking radio shows, speaking at banquets, coordinating with schools
and churches, and attending various seminars and conferences. Performs general maintenance on ball fields and parks to include dragging and lining fields,
fertilizing grounds, poisoning weeds, mowing grass, and cleaning bathrooms and shelters. Prepares, reviews, organizes, and distributes various documents and records including work schedules, MSDS sheets, timesheets, warehouse forms, purchase orders, rosters, applications, reservation forms, and general office correspondence.
Refers to policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
Operates a variety of equipment such as typewriter, computer, copier, calculator, answering machine, radio, scoreboards, telephone, etc.
Uses a variety of tools such as mechanics tools, carpentry tools, hand tools, etc.; and a variety of general office supplies. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Director, department staff, other City employees, volunteers, and the general public. Performs general administrative/office duties as required, including typing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, establishing and maintaining filing systems, etc. Performs duties of Program Coordinator ? Tourism as needed. Performs related duties as required.
