'One Book, One College' Explores 'The Good Food Revolution'
In some neighborhoods, filling up on empty calories is the easiest way to fill an empty stomach. That’s because some neighborhoods exist in “food deserts” where healthy, fresh ingredients are hard to come by in the absence of full-service grocery stores or farmers markets. Author Will Allen recognized this and established an urban farm within walking distance of Milwaukee’s largest public housing project. His book, “The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People and Communities,” is the featured selection for “One Book, One College” at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) throughout the month of April. 
“We have had the idea to focus on public health issues and thought this would be a good way to tie into that,” said Meredith Daniel, head librarian at the Lex Walters Campus-Greenwood. “We want it to be beneficial to our students.” Daniel added that copies of “The Good Food Revolution” are available at the library in Greenwood as well as other PTC campus libraries.
Events lined up for the month include:
- April 1-April 30 in the PTC Library: Seed Exchange (inquire at front desk)
The PTC Library in Greenwood will sponsor an ongoing seed exchange of easy-to-grow and heirloom seeds to share with guests. - April 8, 12:30 p.m. in the PTC Library: Stephanie Turner, Director of the Uptown Market discusses the impact the market is having on our community.
- April 25, 12:45 p.m. in the PTC Library: Daniel Greenwell, PTC Horticulture Program Director, will give advice on how to select and grow quality plants from the garden center.
- April 30, 12:45 p.m. in the PTC Library: Roundtable Discussion of the Featured Book - The Good Food Revolution.
The seed exchange especially is an effective way to garner participation; everyone is encouraged to take a packet and to leave a packet for someone else.
“Libraries have done seed exchanges for years. We have done it here at Piedmont Tech several times in the past,” Daniel said. “That is a way to interest students in growing their own food and flowers as well.”
