Requirements:

A 10th grade education and three and one-half (3.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human ResourcesRegulations.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). (Note:) This position requires a valid Class
A Commercial Driver's License. However, applicants without a Class A Commercial Driver's License will be considered if no qualified applicants with a Class A Commercial Driver's License are available.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Job Description:

Performs diagnosis and repair to vehicles and both light and heavy equipment assigned to maintenance crews. Work includes diagnosis, tear down, repair and/or replacement, reassembly and testing for gas and diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, electrical systems, hydraulics, drive trains, fuel systems, and tires, etc. Work also includes welding, fabrication and cleaning. Performs preventive maintenance to vehicles and equipment including following PM checklists of tasks in accordance with agency PM procedures, manufacturers' specifications and industry standards. Inspects equipment ensuring proper operating and safety features are in order before returning to service. Prepares necessary paperwork recording labor, parts, materials, mileage and work description on job worksheets.
May enter work activities into Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) in absence of Supply Specialist. Complies with safety and environmental rules, regulations and practices. Ensures that work area is kept clean and free of obstacles, that all hazardous waste and materials are properly stored and/or disposed of in accordance with the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. Administers Lock-Out/Tag-Out safety procedures. Ensures all containers are properly labeled.
Also ensures that all tools, equipment and other items are in good working conditions free of any safety defect. Performs other duties as required. Performs routine and general maintenance and repairs to automotive vehicles. Assists other mechanics in complex and difficult diagnosis, repair and maintenance. Answers calls for emergency road service and makes repairs immediately if possible. Performs building and ground maintenance repairs including simple plumbing, painting, carpentry, etc. as necessary. Assists in unloading parts and supplies from delivery trucks and performs necessary clean-up. Works on an assigned 12 hour shift during 24 hour operation during emergency situations including snow and ice, and other emergency situations.
